The partnership between Team Associated and Yokomo dates back to 1972, but it was the relationship in the early 80's with Yokomo's YZ-10 that represents a significant chapter in the history of RC racing.
In the world of RC racing, the 1989 IFMAR Worlds in Australia marked a defining moment. Team Associated and Yokomo emerged as a dominant team. Drivers Cliff Lett, Masami Hirosaka, Jay Halsey and Butch Kloeber showed off their skills with the 4WD YZ-10 and dominated the track with Team Associated's 2WD RC10, laying the foundation for a great partnership between the two companies.
At the 1991 IFMAR World Championships, Masami Hirosaka surprised the racing world with the last-minute arrival of a revolutionary prototype - the Yokomo Works '91. This cutting-edge model was meticulously crafted and featured a number of improvements derived from the winning YZ-10. From its innovative chassis to its 2mm wide drive belts, the Works '91 IFMAR-winning car, piloted by Cliff Lett, embodied Team Associated and Yokomo's commitment to pushing the boundaries of 4WD RC car design.
Yokomo's partnership with industry legend Mike Reedy cemented the brand's reputation for excellence. Reedy's expertise in engine tuning and Yokomo's engineering skills forged a formidable alliance that lasted well into the brushless motor era. And although the Works '91 never officially launched in the U.S., its legacy endured, leaving an indelible mark on the world of RC car racing and cementing Team Associated and Yokomo's status as pioneers in the field.
The partnership between Team Associated and Yokomo continued for years, with the Yokomo YZ-10 being the 4WD racing buggy of choice.
